There was considerable furore in Europe when the Irish electorate rejected the Lisbon treaty in the referendum last year. Suddenly the eyes of the more powerful turned to Ireland in shock as they watched their prized treaty falter, then fail. You see they had reason to be surprised for they had been assured by our leaders that the treaty would be passed, for after all they had all the main parties and the media cheerleading it up until polling

"When the Irish people rejected the Lisbon treaty a year ago the initial reactions ranged from one of shock to horror, to aghastness and temper and vexation," said Mr McCreevy, the EU's Internal Market Commissioner.
"On the other hand, I think all of the politicians of Europe would have known quite well that if a similar question had been put to their electorate in a referendum the answer in 95 per cent of countries would have been 'No' as well," Mr McCreevy told a meeting of accountants in Dublin.
"...this referendum is unique to Ireland and to the Irish people, and that’s a constitutional requirement,” he said. “And my script writer has kindly said that I should not see this as a negative and potentially embarrassing process. The recent publication of the McCarthy Report (An Bord Snip Nua) concerning government cutbacks further illustrates the massive divisions which exist in Irish society. Those that are being penalised most are those who had least responsibility for creating the financial crisis. The report has been compiled by individuals who are so far removed from poverty line existence that they are completely blind to the impact their proposals will have on ordinary citizens.
